A TSH test is done to test the thyroid hormone levels. This aims at finding the working pattern of the thyroid gland, and it can help you arrive at a conclusion if the thyroid levels are overactive or underactive. An overactive thyroid is called hyperthyroidism, and an underactive thyroid is called hypothyroidism. When you go for this test, you will be fortunate to know the problems with the thyroid gland, even before the symptoms start appearing. Lots of health problems are associated with the issues with the thyroid gland. A thyroid blood test can rule out them even at the outset.
How TSH test is done?
The test is very simple. You need to provide a sample of your blood, and the same is tested for thyroid levels. The blood is withdrawn by the lab person, and you can just sit for a few seconds, and wait for the result to come within the day. The best time to give your blood sample is in the morning, as the thyroid levels can fluctuate in the evenings. Also, if you are taking medications, you need to stop using them, and better consult your doctor about stopping them from whence. The test is made within minutes. First, the area from where blood is to be collected is cleaned and sterilized. Then an elastic band is tied around the arm. This makes the veins to swell, and make the process easy. A needle is inserted when the vein is found, and blood is drawn and collected. The elastic band is removed. Bleeding stops in a few seconds.
TSH levels are considered to be normal if the range is 0.4 to 5 mIU/liter. When the levels go higher, the thyroid gland is underactive. During pregnancy, the thyroid levels are higher, and the reading might go low if you are taking medication like dopamine. When thyroid levels are overactive, there can be some reasons behind it. One of them is Grave’s disease. When the iodine levels are high in the body, and if you are taking thyroid hormone medication in high amounts, or taking natural supplements for thyroid hormones, you can see the rating is low, which means the thyroid is overactive or there is more thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood.
Diagnosis and Treatment
When you want to get treated to ensure the thyroid levels are normal, then a synthetic thyroid hormone pill has to be taken daily. This helps you to make the hormone levels back to normal, and as a result, you will lose symptoms of thyroid gradually. Your tiredness will go off, and you will start losing the extra pounds with ease. The thyroid test will be conducted again in another 2 or 3 months to check how you are responding to the medicines. Also, the dosage can be increased or decreased based on the results.
There are different treatments given when the thyroid level is overactive. Radioactive iodine uptake test is done for testing the thyroid function. If your thyroid gland produces hormones higher than the required levels, you will be given medicines to slow it down. Rapid heartbeat rate is one of the symptoms of overactive thyroid. To reduce this, beta blockers are prescribed. A rare treatment method includes a surgical option to remove the thyroid gland. A simple thyroid test can keep a check on the thyroid condition at the initial levels.
