The Thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in front of the neck that produces different hormones in the body. In case the level of these hormones decreases or increases then it causes a wide range of thyroid cancer symptoms in the body.
Thyroid hormones control the speed of metabolism in the body, regulates temperature, the heart rate, the functioning of the central and peripheral nervous system, and more. The thyroid gland basically affects the way nearly every organ functions in the body.
The first and foremost critical thing to do in order to keep a check on how your thyroid hormones are functioning, is to get a thyroid function test done.
Thyroid gland produces three types of hormones: Calcitonin, Triiodothyronine or T3, and Tetraiodothyronine (Thyroxin) or T4. Too much secretion of these hormones is known as hyperthyroidism which causes body functions to speed up whereas too little of thyroid hormone causes body functions to slow down and is known as hypothyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism symptoms includes weight loss, tremors, nervousness, fatigue, sleep disorders, and heat intolerance; on the flip side hypothyroidism shows symptoms like constipation, low heart rate, fatigue, cold intolerance, depression, memory problems etc.
As said prevention is better than cure, in order to cure the disease it is important to look at the importance and the root causes of the problem. Following are some clinically significant facts associated with thyroid gland.
1. The thyroid gland keeps the body in harmony: Since the thyroid gland controls the overall functioning of the body, a little less or too much of thyroid hormones cause many serious problems like heart diseases and high cholesterol.
- 2. There are four types of thyroid cancers: Papillary, follicular, anaplastic and medullary cancer and are associated with the radiation treatment to the head, neck or chest. Radiation treatment is done only for malignant tumor not for benign nowadays.
3. Toxins are harmful for thyroid gland: Thyroid gland is sensitive to toxins like mercury from fish and silver fillings and pesticides. These toxins causes immune attack to the body and hence make you vulnerable to any kind of disorder. So, better take care of your body by detoxifying it and taking a healthy diet.
4. If hyperthyroidism is left untreated it can lead to a life-threatening disorder called thyroid storm, i.e., over-activity of thyroid gland. On the other hand, if hyperthyroidism isn’t treated properly then it leads to myxedema. Symptoms of myxedema coma include low body temperature, dulled mental process, and congestive heart failure.
Some people are always more prone to certain kind of disorder compared to others, in case of hypo or hyperthyroidism the risk factors include age, gender, hormonal changes in the body, family history and auto-immune disorders like diabetes.
Thyroid hormone plays an important role during pregnancy: During the first trimester, the baby depends on the thyroid supply of mothers. After 12 weeks, the baby’s body starts producing its own thyroid hormone but it’s not enough until the baby is 18 to 20 weeks old.
