COE for Hematology

Centre of Excellence in Hematology : The Concept, Location & Composition

Performance of tests, interpretation of data and reporting of results in sub-specialties with high interpretative content, e.g. Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry require professional inputs of the highest quality and competence. Since such resources are limited, developing subspecialty-specific Centres of Excellence (CoE) and optimum utilization of the available talent beyond geographic limitations by using IT driven facilities such as telepathology will be a logical way forward to address the challenges referred to above. Major Clinical Reference Laboratories are increasingly following this integrated and comprehensive approach to maximize the benefits of the available talent and technology. Working on this concept, the Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry Sections at SRL's Mumbai Reference Laboratory which performs a wide variety of specialized tests on samples referred from across the country and from abroad and has a capable leadership, a highly trained manpower and the requisite equipment and infrastructure, has been developed as the "SRL Centre of Excellence" (COE) in Hematology & Flow Cytometry".

Role of a "Core Group in Hematology"

A "Core Group in Hematology" consisting of Hematopathologists, Scientists and Technologists with specialized skills in the subject, drawn from across the various reference and network laboratories, functions as the advisory body for all professional and technical matters concerning the Hematology services within the SRL system and complements the CoE in Hematology. Sharing of information on new developments in the field, consultation on complex and interesting cases, recommending modification and upgrading of technologies, organizing training of staff in specialized techniques are some of the key functions of the COE and the Core Group in Hematology (see below for details). In short, the services offered by the COE in Hematology are readily available to the entire network of SRL laboratories which in turn benefit the patients and the referring physicians across the subcontinent.

Objectives and responsibilities of CoE in Hematology

  • To function as the central point of reference within the SRL system for development, implementation and up grading of all specialized tests in Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry.
  • To act as the referral laboratory for resolution of all difficult hematological cases referred from other SRL laboratories and for second opinion on complex (patient) material referred from outside.
  • To act as the nodal point for resolution of all internal and external clinical and technical queries.
  • To monitor and improve the Hematology services at all network laboratories.
  • To validate all new tests, equipment, procedures and protocols in Hematology specifically to suit the unique and stringent requirements of distant testing system.
  • To help the other laboratories in the SRL system in achieving the highest level of performance in quality assurance (QA) programmes in Hematology, Coagulation (and Flow Cytometry, if applicable).
  • To guide all network laboratories in QA related matters in Hematology and Coagulation.
  • To function as the resource for collection and dissemination of knowledge in Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry and to build network for sharing of information within the SRL chain of laboratories.
  • To prepare teaching/training material and to participate in training of various levels of staff in Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry.
  • To organize CME in Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry for SRL employees and for the Medical community at regular intervals.
  • To develop teaching programmes for DMLT, M.Sc., PhD and MD and obtain recognition from universities as a teaching centre and for these diplomas and degrees.
  • To conduct high quality research in Hematology, Coagulation and Flow Cytometry and publish scientific data in peer reviewed journals.
